Who is Bob McCarty:
I started riding bicycles at the age of 4, but did not begin mountain biking until 1986 at the age of 14. From 1986 to 1995 I rode but not competed. My first race was with Gone Riding in November of 1995 at Razor Back, in Ocala Fl. On the starting line of the beginner wave I had on Vans sneakers, T-shirt, cut off jeans, and a waist bag that had enough tools to break down and assemble an entire bike. Even though I had been mountain biking for 9 years, I did not belong there! I threw up after the first 3 miles and I don’t believe I even finished. Driving home with my stomach in shambles, I started to feel better and something came over me to give it another shot. So I did! In 1996, living in Tallahassee, I entered local races as a beginner. By the end of that year I had finished 2nd in the 19-29 Expert class. In 1997, I won the overall Spring and Fall Series, upgraded to Semi – Pro, and landed a sponsorship with Iron Horse Bicycles. During 1998 and 1999, with Iron Horse as a sponsor, I competed in some Nationals, as well as regionals.
In December of 1999 I moved from Tallahassee to Ft Lauderdale and started a new career. Having never thrown a leg over a bike, but a few times in that 5 year span, made me crazy! So I did what any sane cyclist would do; I quit my job, started my own business, and got back on the bike. I struggled a little in the beginning of 2005 with less than stellar finishes, but was determined to be on top again! I trained like a man possessed that summer and finished 2nd in state in 2005. From then on I continued my training and placed 3rd in 2006, 3rd in 2007, 3rd in 2009, 4th in the 2010 season, 1st in the 2011 series, and 1st in 2012 in the Pro Category.
Now at the age of 40, competed in over 230 events, and riding for AG Bicycles I feel in the best shape of my life. I am looking forward to a long, long career in this crazy thing called Mountain Biking!
Most of you know I have made teaching mountain bike skills my life, as it has always been my true passion. Though I have taught hundreds of students over the decades, I have never lost the excitement of watching my students achieve their goals and dreams. I also, have never lost that passion or compromised on the values that would help me achieve my dream, starting a race team. Now at 40 years of age, I finally have seen that dream come to fruition and I am proud to announce Florida’s new Mountain Bike race team, AG Factory Racing McCarty Training.
Back in April, I was approached by the owners of AG Bicycles, AG is a road bike company that makes their own frames in Italy, they wanted to enter the mountain bike market and wanted me to help design it. I got right to work, creating the ultimate mountain bike. Every change I advised, they made with out question. It is truly a mountain bike, designed by a mountain biker, for mountain bikers. I was even bestowed with the ultimate tribute from AG, the McCarty Signature Series Mountain Bike, set to debut in December 2012.
I truly believe in the South Florida mountain bike scene, where you can ride year round. Our State Series starts in September and ends in December, then the South Florida Series from November to March. While other areas are snowed in, we are racing strong. Every month there are numerous races from XC, endurance, night races and recently dirt crits. This is truly a breeding ground for off road cyclist. I believe the potential of Florida's riders go unnoticed too often on a national level. My passion is to bring attention to the incredible athletes Florida has while shining a positive light on the community.
The good people at AG Bicycles offered me the support of a Factory backed Team. I wanted this team to be different in many ways. AGFR MT for 2012/2013 will consist of 4 riders. In 2013/2014 I will be adding two additional riders, and 2014/2015 two more, capping out the team size at 8 people is the goal. My team was selected on the basis of being, approachable, professional, athletics, past experience, future potential, and their ability to give back. There are so many great riders in Florida, that fit that description, the decision was not an easy.
I could not do this alone. The first thing I did was recruit a dedicated team manager, I found this in John Koch Sr. I watched him tirelessly support his son’s racing, I wanted that type of dedication for my team. When he agreed to take on this role, I knew I had chosen someone that would give his all to the team and cycling community.
Now the team!
Bob McCarty, I am the Team Captain, at 40 years old I truly feel like I am in the best shape of my life. I have competed in over 210 events with great success over the last 18 years. This year I will be racing 19-29/PRO. I have always preached that we have no limits, so, I will practice what I preach.
Brett Whitman, 30-39 CAT3, one of the nicest people you will ever meet. You would never guess he was at one time considered one of the fastest inline speed skaters in the world. That’s right he represented the USA and raced around the world. Even though he only started mountain biking in February 2012, I see amazing potential. He knows what is takes to be a world-class athlete and he is committed to the team effort.
John “JM” Michael Koch, 15-18 jr, a person I have called an ambassador to the sport. Even though his race age is only 14, we feel he is competitive enough to move up. He is the 2012 Georgia State Champion and set 3 course records in the 2012 US Cup East, including the 1996 Olympic Course. Even more so he is an honor roll student at a medical academy. I see Olympic potential in JM.
Ethan Negas, born in 2002, he is our youngest rider, he will race 9-11 and 11-14, but I have no doubt he can handle it. Ethan is an accomplished tri-athlete who finished 4th in the Iron Kids National Championships in Iowa in August 2012. I watched him ride and I knew we had a champion on our hands. He is also a gifted student and just a great kid. I see this young man with Olympic potential.
We know our team will be a success story, unfolding in front of all of you. Please check the Race Schedule tab to see where AG Factory Racing McCarty Training will be this season. Looking forward to an awesome 2012/2013 Season!
